Featured Track: Beyond the Glow, *Halo cover of Myristica
Interesting to hear pianist SoundClouders doing covers of other pianist SoundClouders.
Here we have *Halo, aka Pasquale Riviezzo of Milan, Italy, transcribing Beyond the Glow by Myristica, aka Mei-Ling Grey of Sussex, UK.
Myristica’s original track is an orchestral composition that does have a piano part in it but the piano’s role is no greater than any other instrument in the composition, unlike a concerto-type piece which pianos generally find themselves in when in the company of an orchestra.
*Halo has very elegantly taken the essence of Myristica’s composition and brought all other parts expressively to a single piano part. He has then overlaid atmospheric rainfall sounds to bed the track into more of an Ambient genre, an aspect which resonates well with Myristica’s own largely ambient/chill-out portfolio.
And here’s Myristica’s original.

Andrew Eales Reviews: Sound Sketches by Graham Lynch
One of SoundCloud’s many strengths is the number of classical composers the site now enjoys among its membership.
One such is Graham Lynch, a composer whose works have been performed by (among others) the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Hilliard Ensemble, and in venues as diverse and prestigious as London’s South Bank and the Wigmore Hall, the Paris Conservatoire and the Merkin Hall New York.
In the first of his regular learning-oriented features, The Piano on SoundCloud guest writer Andrew Eales takes a closer look at Graham’s Sound Sketches project with samples on SoundCloud.
Dave Greening - Heartache (Owsey’s Ambient Version)
I think Dave Greening has played something really original and heartfelt here. Original in the context of his own work and also in the context of the general piano work on SoundCloud.
Owsey, a fast-rising electronic music artist from Northern Ireland, has shone this in solar brilliance with atmospheric sounds that give this track a mankind-on-earth experience and touches deeply.
One of the loveliest piano-based tracks I’ve heard on SoundCloud this year.
Featured Pianist: Andrew Eales Interview
This week I caught up with Andrew Eales, pianist and teacher from Milton Keynes, UK, who is a very active member of the piano community on SoundCloud. Read on for many inspiring thoughts from the man himself.
Looks like Dave Greening and I were inspired to write about Andrew Eales at the same time! Look out for a feature interview immediately following this reblog.
Andrew Eales is a professional piano teacher based in the UK. He is one of the finest pianists on the ‘cloud, and one of the most helpful guys I know. Recently he set up a group on Facebook called The Piano Cloud which is an absolutely fantastic community that links ‘clouders on Facebook, in an…
Nothing gives music a greater voice than raw passion. Of this quality Josiah MacArthur is not lacking. Dave Greening shares my enthusiasm for his project A Psalmists Fire, and has these words for us…
Josiah MacArthur, from New Hampshire, is one of my all-time favourite contributors to the SoundCloud community. Known as A Psalmists Fire he constructs some of the most marvellous piano improvisations regularly, and all to an impeccable standard. Piano improvisation is something very close to…
The Piano on SoundCloud This Month: October 2011
It is exciting to be part of something small that is on the fast track to becoming something big. That is something all of us here can share in at least two ways.
SoundCloud itself is going from strength to strength and building many strong communities of musicians and other content creators, and listeners. With a membership that has ballooned from 1 million in 2010 to around 8 million today, more sounds are getting heard by more ‘clouders than ever before.
Participating in this growth is an army of pianists and piano enthusiasts, emerging from silence to a stage of their own. While the top 1% of piano artists can be heard on the radio, seen on television and can be found in your local record store, now the under-recognised 99% of pianists have a chance of being heard. The social networking aspects of SoundCloud can also offer the 99% a more-or-less constant stream of encouragement to improve their craft.
This blog hopes to provide a window onto this blossoming accessibility of music and encourages readers to share new discoveries. If you come across something interesting, please message me directly on SoundCloud (http://soundcloud.com/oliversadie).
Another artist that I’d like to share with you is Mark Sandroni, who originally wrote this track as a piano solo, but then turned it into a full blown symphony! Really took me by surprise! Have a listen :)
Featured Track: Great North Road by Guy Jackson
Every so often a track makes me turn my head, widen my eyes and fixate my attention with absolute focus. One such track that delivers all these, including a literal turning of the head on cue with the effect of passing car at around 0.30, is Guy Jackson’s Great North Road.
Perambulating with purpose at around 50bpm in 3/4 time, Great North Road opens with a sequence that for a moment could be mistaken for a Chopin Prelude.
